Coach Lawson, III
Coach William W. Lawson, III
Coach Lawson was born in Petersburg, VA on March 29, 1971. He is the son of Mrs Lula H. Lawson, who
retired as the Department chairperson of the Guidance Department at Petersburg High School and of the
late William W. Lawson, Jr who retired as the Head Basketball Coach and Atheletic Director at Petersburg
High School. Coach Lawson is the grandson of the late Bertha Lawson, who was a former elementary
school teacher in the Petersburg Public School system. Also, he is the grandson of the late William W.
Lawson,Sr., who was the head football coach at Virginia State College.

Coach William Lawson,III is a 1989 graduate of Matoaca High School. While attending Matoaca, he
participated on the Varsity Golf and Football teams.

William received his Bachelor of Science Degree from Virginia State University in 1997. While at Virginia
State University, he served as a Student Assistant for the Men's Basketball Team.

In March of 1995, Coach Lawson started coaching AAU (Amateur Athletic Union) Basketball with Richmond
Metro Association. In November of 1997, he was named as the Head Basketball Coach for the Ninth Grade
Team at Petersburg High School. On October 4, 2002, Coach William Lawson, III was named as the Head
Boys' Basketball Coach at Petersburg High School. While coaching at Petersburg High School, Coach
Lawson has been acknowledged for the following:

In March 1997, he founded Petersburg Basketball AAU. He formed the organization and three teams were
started. While coaching AAU Basketball , his teams have competed in numerous local tournaments and
various tournaments in the following states: Virginia, Maryland, Florida, Georgia, District of Columbia,
North Carolina, South Carolina, Oklahoma, and Pennsylvania. His teams have qualified for the National
Tournaments in various states such as Florida , Oklahoma, Tennessee, and Texas.
